We are Consultant Ophthalmologists (eye doctors) who have additional specialised training in eyelid and facial plastic surgery (Oculoplastic Surgeon). As well as the eyelids, we specialise in managing watery eyes, the bones surrounding the eye, surrounding areas of the eyelid (brow, cheek, and forehead).

Kent Eyelid Surgery offers a range of medical services including general review of eyelid conditions and the surrounding area, surgical treatments (minor and major surgery), non-surgical treatments to the eyelids and surrounding facial areas (rejuvenating and anti-wrinkle injections).
The Consultant will discuss your concerns, review your medical history, perform a relevant clinical examination and, following this, will have a full discussion of the available treatment options including any proposed surgery. You will be provided information regarding the nature of the surgery, the recovery period and the anticipated results along with any potential risks and complications of any procedure. Photographs will be taken before and after surgery.
Our team have a duty to ensure that your health records are maintained appropriately and that your confidentiality is protected at all times. All patient data and photographs will be stored with strict confidentiality under the regulations of the Data Protection Act. We aim to provide you with a professional discreet and confidential service.
We do not routinely perform procedures on the same day as clinic appointments, since we feel that it is best that you have time to think about the procedure offered following the consultation. Under certain circumstances, and if information has been sent to you in advance by us, we may be able to perform procedures on the same day such as: small skin biopsy (small sample of abnormal skin or growth sent to laboratory for diagnostic purposes), excision of small cyst, non-surgical treatments (Botox, and Profhilo). For any procedure performed, we advise that you do not drive to and from the appointment since your eyesight may be affected following the treatment.
Most oculoplastic surgery is performed under local anaesthetic (you will be awake and given injections to numb the eyelids). You should be able to go home shortly after surgery and will need to arrange for someone to take you home as you won't be able to drive.
If the procedure requires general anaesthetic (you will be asleep for the surgery), this is only available at Spencer Wing Ashford, and in most circumstances you should be able to go home the same day, depending on how you are feeling following surgery and the level of support you have at home (there must be a responsible adult with you for 24 hours following general anaesthetic).
If you normally take blood thinning medication (Aspirin, Warfarin, Clopidogrel etc.) you may be expected to stop taking this for a short period of time beforehand. This depends on the surgery you are having and will be discussed at the time of the consultation.
In most cases we put an eye pad dressing over the eye. Depending on the procedure, this may be for 30 min or until the next day or longer. We will advise you of the expected length of padding required for you at your consultation.
Recovery will depend on the extent and type of surgery performed and varies from person to person. It is usually between 7-14 days. In some cases you may be able to drive 24-48 hours after surgery depending on the extent of eyelid surgery performed and if your eyesight is unaffected. We will provide you with post-operative advice tailored to the procedure performed to help with your recovery. In most cases we would advise using cold compresses/icepacks to the operated area to help reduce bruising and swelling. This also helps with pain and speeds up your recovery.
At the time of your consultation, we can discuss the type of sutures we use for that particular surgery. These will be either dissolvable sutures (do not require to be removed) or non-dissolvable sutures (require removal). Dissolvable sutures can take 6 weeks or longer to dissolve/fall out, but can be removed at follow-up consultation if necessary. In most circumstances, sutures can be removed in clinic at around 10 days.
Our administration staff can be contacted by email and telephone Mon-Friday 9am to 5pm. We aim to answer most general queries within 48 hours on weekdays only. Clinic consultations normally take place Mon-Fri usually between the hours of 9am to 5pm. However, in certain cases and with prior arrangement, we may be able to offer clinic consultations after 5pm. Surgical Procedures usually take place between the hours of 9am and 6pm on Wednesday and Friday, but other days of the week may be available as well.
Yes, but ONLY at Spencer Private Hospitals. At Folkestone Eye Centre and Herne Bay, we offer appointments and surgery for adults aged 18 years and over only.
There is no such thing as cheap safe high quality surgery, especially around the delicate eye area, just as there is no substitute for experience in providing a bespoke service of the highest standard of care. There is no single operation that fits all patients but rather each procedure needs to be tailored to the requirements of every individual in order to achieve the best possible results, hence the exact procedure price will vary from individual to individual.
We endeavour to provide an exact quote for the total cost of the surgical procedure within 2 working days, after your initial consultation. This will be based on a “fixed package price” which includes a surgical fee, hospital fee, and if necessary an anaesthetic fee (general anaesthetic and sedation cases at Spencer Wing Ashford). Payment for surgery is due in advance of the proposed surgery.
Payment needs to be made in full to secure the booking of the clinic consultation and also to book any procedure/surgery planned, and can be made by BACS transfer and credit card (please ask). Finance options are also available and you may enquire about this.
Yes, from February/March 2025 Kent Eyelid Surgery will be seeing insured patients at Spencer Wing, Ashford. You would need to check with your insurance provider regarding procedures that they will cover. Most Private Medical insurers usually require a GP referral before they can authorise any appointments or treatment, it is best that you check first. Typically insurance companies will cover surgical procedures that directly affect vision and day-to day life such as: droopy eyelids (if affecting peripheral vision, which is confirmed with photography and visual field testing performed at our clinic), in-turning of eyelid (entropion), out-ward turning of eyelid (ectropion), tumours/growths, cysts, watery eyes, and sore eyes.
