Ms Chowdhury is an experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon.
Her main area of interest is dealing with conditions affecting the eyelids and performing surgery for a wide variety of conditions including blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, surgery for watery eyes, removal of eyelid lumps and bumps, excision of eyelid tumours and reconstruction, entropion and ectropion repair.
Ms Chowdhury qualified in medicine from St Mary's Hospital Medical School (Imperial College) in London with a MBBS and a First Class honours degree in Pathology. She undertook Ophthalmology training in two major Ophthalmology teaching hospital deaneries (London and the West Midlands). She gained further subspecialist fellowship training in Oculoplastics in the South Thames London Deanery and at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Ms Chowdhury was appointed as a NHS Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Oculoplastics at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey in 2009, where she set up and led a thriving oculoplastic service. In 2019 Ms Chowdhury moved to East Kent where she was appointed as a Consultant Oculoplastic Surgeon to join her husband (Mr Mike Mota) who is also a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon at East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust.
Ms Chowdhury is passionate about teaching and training. She has been a Clinical and Educational supervisor for Ophthalmologists in training for many years. She has trained many Ophthalmologists in both Oculoplastic Surgery and Cataract Surgery throughout her career. She has been an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists since 2015 and sits on the Examinations Sub-Committee, examining for the FRCOphth examinations in the UK and internationally. She is also a Medical Appraiser for East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust.
Mr Mota is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon.
He has expertise in aesthetic eyelid surgery, ptosis surgery, thyroid eye disease, watery eyes, repairing malposition of the eyelid (inward turning and outward turning of eyelid), removal of eyelid lumps and bumps, dry eye, blepharitis, facial palsy, eyelid skin cancer management and reconstruction, and facial dystonias such as blepharospasm.
He qualified in Medicine from the University of Southampton and also obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of Neurosciences from University College London. Mr Mota did his Ophthalmology and initial Oculoplastic advanced training at Oxford, followed by a Fellowship in Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery at Leicester. Mr Mota was appointed in 2017 as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic/Orbital Surgeon at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Trust (EKHUFT).
Mr Mota was the lead for the Urgent Eye service at East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust from 2017 to 2023. He is a clinical supervisor for eye doctors in training, and teaches GPs and optometrists in the management of Urgent Eye conditions. Mr Mota runs a joint Facial and Oculoplastic clinic with his Maxillo-Facial Consultant colleague (Mr Kemal Tekeli) at EKHUFT and together they provide a highly specialised service for patients requiring complex care to the face and eye region.
Mr Mota also works alongside his Ears Nose & Throat Consultant colleague (Mr Bertram Fu) providing a lacrimal service (watery eye clinic) at EKHUFT.
He has published and presented internationally in the field of Oculoplastics and is a member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (BOPSS).
