Ms Sharmin Chowdhury MBBS (London) BSc (Hons) FRCOphth (London)

Ms Chowdhury is an experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon with a strong focus on eyelid procedures. Her main area of interest lies in addressing conditions that affect the eyelids and performing various types of eyelid surgery, including blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, surgery for watery eyes, removal of eyelid lumps and bumps, excision of eyelid tumours, and reconstruction, as well as entropion and ectropion repair. 


Ms Chowdhury qualified in medicine from St Mary's Hospital Medical School (Imperial College) in London, earning her MBBS along with a First Class honours degree in Pathology. She completed her Ophthalmology training in two major teaching hospital deaneries in London and the West Midlands. She further pursued subspecialist fellowship training in Oculoplastic Surgery in the South Thames London Deanery and at Moorfields Eye Hospital. In 2009, Ms Chowdhury was appointed as a NHS Consultant Ophthalmologist specializing in Oculoplastic Surgery at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey, where she established and led a successful oculoplastic service. In 2019, she relocated to East Kent to join her husband, Mr Mike Mota, also a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon, at East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust. 


Passionate about teaching and training, Ms Chowdhury has served as a Clinical and Educational supervisor for Ophthalmologists in training for many years. Throughout her career, she has trained numerous Ophthalmologists in both Oculoplastic Surgery and Cataract Surgery. Since 2015, she has been an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is part of the Examinations Sub-Committee, assessing candidates for the FRCOphth examinations in the UK and internationally. Additionally, she acts as a Medical Appraiser for East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust.

Mr Mike Mota BM BSc(Hons) FRCOphth (London)

Mr. Mota is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon, specializing in various eyelid procedures, including aesthetic eyelid surgery and blepharoplasty. His expertise extends to ptosis surgery, thyroid eye disease, managing watery eyes, and repairing malposition of the eyelid, which includes both inward and outward turning of the eyelid. He also addresses issues such as eyelid lumps and bumps, dry eye, blepharitis, facial palsy, eyelid skin cancer management and reconstruction, and facial dystonias like blepharospasm.


Mr. Mota qualified in Medicine from the University of Southampton and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Neurosciences from University College London. He completed his Ophthalmology and initial advanced training in Oculplastic Surgery at Oxford, followed by a Fellowship in Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery at Leicester. In 2017, Mr. Mota was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic/Orbital Surgeon at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Trust (EKHUFT).


From 2017 to 2023, Mr. Mota served as the lead for the Urgent Eye service at East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust. He is a clinical supervisor for eye doctors in training and provides education to GPs and optometrists on managing urgent eye conditions. Mr. Mota also runs a joint Facial and Oculoplastic clinic with his Maxillo-Facial Consultant colleagues, at EKHUFT, where they offer a highly specialized service for patients requiring complex care related to the face and eye region.


Additionally, Mr. Mota collaborates with his Ears Nose & Throat Consultant colleagues, Mr. Bertram Fu and Mr Eugene Omakobia, to provide a lacrimal service (watery eye clinic) at EKHUFT.


He has published and presented internationally in the field of Oculoplastic Surgery and is a member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (BOPSS).

Correction of eyelid position (upper and lower) is an essential part of Oculoplastic Surgery. This includes excess skin removal from the upper and lower eyelids through blepharoplasty, which is a common eyelid surgery. We also provide services for the removal of skin lesions, including biopsies if necessary, and excision of eyelid cysts. Additionally, our procedures encompass the excision of excess fat from the eyelid area and anti-wrinkle treatments for both the face and neck. We also specialize in the treatment of eyelid and facial spasms, performed by our Consultant Ophthalmologists.

Folkestone Eye Centre (self-funding patients, adults only) offers various eyelid procedures, including blepharoplasty. Herne Bay Ophthalmology Clinic (self-funding patients, adults only) also specializes in eyelid surgery performed by experienced Consultant Ophthalmologists. Spencer Private Hospitals - Ashford (insurers and self-funding patients, adults and children) will begin offering Oculoplastic Surgery services from February/March 2025.
